WebI only do it on really messed up boards (no oil at all, was all gunky, really dry) and it helps the wood out a lot. You'd be just fine using mineral oil as well, I use Howard's lemon oil as it's mineral oil based from what I can tell. If you put carnuba wax on a rosewood board, you will most likely regret it, as the wax will dry white and super hard in the pores of the wood.
